The Case For Committee Approach To Wr3 For Cowboys In 2024

“Next man up” is a commonly uttered phrase when a player needs replacing. Whether it's injury, free agency, retirement or a release that's pushing Player A out the door, the logical is Player B seamlessly filling the recently vacated role.

When Michael Gallup was let go in the 2024 offseason, the next man up appeared to be third-year player Jalen Tolbert. Tobert, a former third round pick, is the Cowboys' highest drafted player save for starters CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks, both first-round picks. After a rocky rookie season, Tolbert showed major promise in his second year with Dallas and seems primed for yet another step forward in 2024. As such, he's the obvious to replace Gallup at WR3.

But maybe searching for Player B is the wrong way to look at the WR situation in Dallas. Maybe potential can get maximized if the answer isn't a single player but rather a committee of players. Given the young and unproven nature of the Cowboys WR room this season, it may not just be more , but also more realistic.

Tobert, 6-foot-1, 195-pounds, is the most experienced of the bunch. His career totals of 24 receptions, 280 yards and two touchdowns aren't much, but they're head-and-shoulders above what anyone else on the depth chart has accomplished.

Tolbert, 25, has a wide range of skills and a workable set of athletic traits that make him the favorite to get most of Gallup's snaps. He has a knack for the deep ball and the size to play outside. It's unknown if he's physical enough to handle the X role, but that's where the second member of the committee comes into play.

Brooks, 6-foot-1, 201-pounds, has been turning heads throughout the spring. He's been a popular upset pick to replace Gallup in 2024 and a big reason why is his fit at the X. Brooks isn't notably bigger than Tolbert, but he plays more physically and can win the slant route consistently, even in contested situations.

If Brooks can show trustworthiness from the X in training camp, he's going to carve out a role in 2024. The Cowboys love to play Lamb in the slot and Brooks would potentially allow that to continue.

Turpin is the Cowboys top return man and chief gadget player at WR. At 5-foot-9, 153-pounds he's the smallest of the bunch and somewhat capped as to how much of an offensive contributor he can be. His main contributions on offense will likely be as a rusher on sweep options and the occasional screen recipient.

Technically, this may fit the WR4 profile better than it fits a WR3 committee replacement role, but Turpin can potentially grow his role from the previous two seasons and become a bigger part of the offense if the coaching staff loosens the leash.

It's difficult to say what the rookie Flournoy has to offer. Coming from tiny Southeast Missouri State, Flournoy is abnormally raw for a draft selection. Odds are his maturation as a pro WR will take time and require significant patience. The Miles Austin development plan is probably a best-case scenario for Flournoy.

But there's a a sliver of hope Flournoy could carve out a role early. Blessed with elite size, strength, speed and general athleticism, Flournoy brings something to the offense the others cannot. He could be the physically dominant X the Cowboys are looking for or he could be a screen specialist. His knowledge of the NFL route tree may not be up to snuff but in a couple familiar roles that lean on his natural ability, Flournoy could contribute as a rookie by taking over some of job Gallup left behind.

Cropper was a stand out in training camp last but fell short of making the roster. He plays bigger than his 6-foot, 175-pound frame would otherwise indicate and may be able to contribute in a variety of ways in a WR rotation.

Like the others, training camp will be critical for him to even earn a roster spot, let alone a committee role for WR3 snaps, but Cropper is someone everyone should have an eye on because he has insiders talking.

Durden is on the outside looking in at the moment but will be given every chance to earn a roster spot this . This season's “dark horse” candidate at WR is a blend of size, speed and special team ability.

An ACL injury ended his bid for a role in 2023 but he's expected to be back and in the mix in Year 2 of his pro career. He may only project as a bottom of the roster player in 2024 but he has elite traits and comfort within the system, so he has a real shot at surprising people.
