In a recent interview, Heinicke expressed his frustration with constantly being compared to Jackson. “I have a lot of respect for Lamar and what he’s been able to accomplish in the league. But I think it’s unfair to constantly compare me to him just because we’re both mobile quarterbacks. We have different playing styles and strengths, and I think it’s important to recognize and appreciate that.”
Heinicke has certainly made a name for himself with the Commanders, stepping up in crucial moments and leading the team to some impressive victories. While he may not have the same level of recognition as Jackson, Heinicke has proven himself to be a capable and talented quarterback in his own right.
The comparisons between the two quarterbacks may stem from their ability to extend plays with their legs and make plays on the run. However, Heinicke believes that there is more to being a successful quarterback than just running ability. “I pride myself on my ability to read defenses, make quick decisions, and deliver accurate passes. Those are the things that I focus on and work on every day to improve as a quarterback.”
As the Commanders continue their push for a playoff spot, Heinicke will look to continue to prove himself and show that he is more than just a “poor man’s Lamar Jackson.” With his determination and work ethic, there’s no doubt that Heinicke will continue to make a name for himself in the NFL, regardless of any comparisons to other players.
