I Was “Too Young” To Have Colon Cancer

When most people think of colon cancer, they often associate it with older individuals. However, what many do not realize is that colon cancer can affect individuals of any age, including young adults. This was the case for me, a 27-year-old woman who was diagnosed with colon cancer.

I first started experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. Initially, I brushed off these symptoms, attributing them to stress or a poor diet. However, as the symptoms persisted and worsened, I knew something was not right. I decided to visit my doctor, who performed a series of tests, including a colonoscopy. It was during this procedure that the doctors discovered a tumor in my colon.

I was shocked and terrified by the diagnosis. How could someone so young have colon cancer? I was told that while colon cancer is more common in older individuals, it can still occur in younger adults. In fact, the incidence of colon cancer in individuals under 50 has been on the rise in recent years.

Despite being “too young” to have colon cancer, I underwent surgery to remove the tumor and started chemotherapy treatment. It was a long and difficult journey, but with the support of my family, friends, and medical team, I was able to overcome this disease.

My experience has taught me the importance of listening to my body and advocating for my health. It is crucial for young adults to be aware of the signs and symptoms of colon cancer, and not dismiss them simply because of their age. Early detection and treatment can make a significant difference in the outcome of the disease.

I want to raise awareness about colon cancer in young adults and encourage others to be proactive about their health. No one is immune to this disease, and it is important to be informed and proactive in order to catch it early and increase the chances of successful treatment.

I may have been “too young” to have colon cancer, but I am proof that it can happen to anyone. It is a reminder to never take your health for granted and to always listen to your body. Colon cancer does not discriminate based on age, and early detection is key in the fight against this disease.
